Joomla 1.5 Rotating Image SlideShow module

March 13, 2008 · Filed Under ImageSlideshow, JavaScript, PHP, joomla

Finally got my act together and got the Joomla 1.5 slideshow module up and running.

Will be writing up a tutorial on how to develop this type of module for Joomla 1.5. Follows the usual J! 1.5 install process and has parameter that can be changed to suit your need.

Works fine with IE 7 and FireFox 2. Don’t have IE6 to test with so if any problems are found please email me at briask@briask.com

Written in PHP and Javascript, it has proved to be a nice introduction to programming in those languages

After trying to install other slideshow plug-ins that failed to install properly and a few hours of frustration, finally an extension that is simple and functional. All that I want is to rotate 3 pictures on top module of my site. This extension does the job beautifully. Great job!

Thanks in advance for writing your tutorial, very interesting!!

Is it possible to use this module by giving only one sizing parameter. I mean one maximum size for width or height. I like to use this module on a position ‘right’ with a maximum width of, on about, 150 pixels. It would be great if all the pictures in the selected map will be resized with this width.

Is there a Demopage to have a glimps on the running Slideshow?

  4. Good Web Practices on March 14th, 2008 9:34 am

Will you be posting a demo of this module?

  5. joomlauser on March 14th, 2008 11:17 am

hi, would be nice, if you have a demo of the slideshow….

  6. brijesh on March 14th, 2008 11:53 am

    this is very good

Just wondering if there is a way to put the slideshow mod inside an article in joomla???
    BTW - great job. !!
Also, the mod works in IE6, but it doesn’t seem to respect the module position. It put the mod below a frontpage article, where I had selected “position - right” in the mod parameters. OK in FF though.

Will add URL destination in next version, expect it next week, need to celebrate St. Patricks day …

    Demo now playing here
Also will look at resizing images.

Enjoy! keep an eye on this site or Joomla.org for updates.

    Hi,

This module is great. But there is only ONE DRAWBACK. I cannot set the sequence of slideshow. Is it possible for you to update this module, so that it shows the slideshows after sorting ascending by filenames?

    Thanks,
    Jim

  14. admin on March 16th, 2008 11:50 am

Yes, I can add a sort mechanism. Expect to see it the next update next week.

  15. jim on March 16th, 2008 6:43 pm

    GREAT…will wait for next week!!!

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hello,
Great tool, I love the ease of use! I ran into one problem. When using rhuk_milkyway and placing the slideshow in the “right” section, IE6 display gets messed up when you resize the window narrower and then wider again. It may very well be a template problem, but considering that this is the default joomla 1.5 template, you may want to look at it.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I don’t have access to IE6 so can’t see the issue you have described, which makes it kinda hard to diagnose and resolve.

If you or indeed anyone else has any ideas on what it might be cause, please let me know.

    Thanks,Grea tool!
i’m download and using very good.
    You can teaching to me….

I found this easy to install and configure.

It appears that it is not possible to run two of these modules on the same page at the same time. Anyone else find this ??

  20. Roel on March 25th, 2008 3:16 pm

Great module!!! Precisely what I was looking for. I do have a question though, so it would even be better suited.
For my site I need this to be really random. Now this module does take a picture from the directory seemingly random, however everytime the site opens the sequence is the same. Whenever you open the site it always starts with the same picture, followed by the same second picture and so on. I would like (and I need) the sequence to be random and on every load different. Is this possible?

  21. Roel on March 25th, 2008 3:56 pm

A friend of mine says this (earlier post) can be realized by using an array. But my knowledge of PHP ends here!

  22. briask on March 25th, 2008 5:25 pm

Indeed it can, there are many different ways it can be accomplished. As I’m using this to learn PHP & Javascript I’ll probably try most of them until I find a neat solution.

  23. briask on March 25th, 2008 5:25 pm

Yes, truly random display of images will be in the next update.

  24. lumo on March 28th, 2008 10:51 pm

Thanks for this, the module works well…

Don’t worry about the IE6 problem, it’s not your module, it’s the templates. Both the default templates on http://demo.joomla.org/1.5/ fall to bits when you resize the window in IE6 (the content drops down below the nav column, probably needs a ie6 conditional css to give fixed widths to the columns)

    Cheers

Is there a version of this for Joomla 1.0? If so, where can I go to download it?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Is it possible for you to add a module class suffix? I really need this option available if possible. Excellent module none the less! Finally an image rotator that works multiple times!

  27. briask on April 2nd, 2008 9:26 pm

Module Class suffix is under consideration to be added, if I can get it cleanly working I’ll add to next update other wise it’ll have to wait.

  28. Shane on April 2nd, 2008 11:37 pm

No worries Briask. I look forward to the day its added! :)

  29. shahriza on April 5th, 2008 7:35 am

Hi.. how can i install this module in my front page? can anyone teach me?

  30. sublevels on April 7th, 2008 8:57 am

Works, great! Only problem I’ve seen is that the image flicker a bit before fading into. Maybe you should implement some preloading of the images? I’ve seen this in Safari and Opera.

  31. Vincent on April 7th, 2008 7:33 pm

Yes, on Safari, even on your demo page, I also have image flicker a bit before fading into.

    Great great job !!!

  32. biltong on July 15th, 2008 10:31 am

After spending a couple of hours trying to get Joomlaworks’ Simple Image Rotator to work with problems with the JS Litefast template and Joomla v1.5.4, I found this module, installed it and worked instantly!
Give yourself a pat on the back, nice job.
